![]() ![]() A fundamental element of great Heli-Skiing is great guiding. Our 110-member guiding corps averages 12 ½ years of guiding experience. The great majority of CMH guides are fully certified by the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA), a process that takes an average of eight years. All guides take ongoing refresher courses in avalanche hazard evaluation and stabilization, weather analysis, and emergency medicine. These Heli-Ski professionals come from Canada, the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, and New Zealand, they share a fiery love of skiing and a commitment to camaraderie, graceful guiding, and technical expertise. And they are one more reason that an astounding 70 percent of CMH Heli-Skiers are returning guests. Over the past 4 decades, these men and women have learned that they are incredibly fortunate to earn their livelihood from a profession that gives them such deep satisfaction. They easily share their passion for the mountains with our skiers. But it is their vigilance in keeping our skiers as safe as possible that is the hallmark of each CMH Heli-Skiing guide. Mountain guiding as an honoured vocation has deep roots in the ranges of western Canada, dating back as far as 1897, when the Canadian Pacific Railroad hired two Swiss guides to spark tourism in Banff. Our CMH Mountain Guides are proud inheritors and up-keepers of that tradition, a rare one in today's world. It's a tradition that stresses "respect and awe" for the mountains and the "humble moderation and understanding" our founder Hans Gmoser has always valued.
